Stitching panoramas is daunting even for the pros but we're going to take this step-by-step tutorial and learn how to stitch and edit panoramic photography in a digestible way for all levels.
Because automatic panorama cameras (and phones) give you a stitched file, most of you will want to head down to the editing section. For you manual photographers, we get the fun stuff. 😀
Quick Tip: Stack your brackets before you stitch your images. Stitching programs use control points that vary by exposure because the algorithm can't always make sense of extreme blacks and whites.

Most photographers edit before they stack. I do the same or my stock workflow but my workflow for ‘fine art' differs from this guide. Expect beautiful panoramas if you use this method but not quite /my/ style.
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Photoshop is arguably the most versatile program on our list but that doesn't make it the best suited for panorama stitching. It does offer several options, more-so than Lightroom, but is less mighty than PTGui. If you already have an Adobe subscription and don't want to throw down for PTGui, this is the best option.
Adobe Lightroom
Lightroom is the easiest stitching program that also offers automatic bracket stacking. However, it is the least versatile, offering few options and limited editing capabilities compared to Photoshop or Skylum software. I also run into some issues with wide-angle photography stitching in particular. It's good, perfect for the hobbyist, but seek more if you want to get serious about panorama photography.

Without a doubt the most versatile on the list, but it comes with a hefty price tag for most. At $143, it offers mind (or photo) bending options, projections, custom masks, control points, even HDR correction settings. Super easy to use, it also automatically blends your photos, which saves a ton of time. It's a dream for panoramic photography.
Standard Panorama Stitching
Quick Reminder: Stack your brackets first.
Adobe Lightroom
- In either Library or Develop, Control-Click on all of the photos you want in your panorama.
- Right-click on any of your selected photos. Hit Photo Merge > Panorama.
- Wait for the preview to load. Most panoramas will use either a spherical or cylindrical projection.
- Hit Merge. You will now have a DNG panorama file in your library.

Adobe Photoshop
- Open all of your images in Photoshop. They will all be in separate windows.
- Go to File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack, click Add Open Files. Wait a moment and Photoshop will place all them files into one window.
- On the right part of the workspace, in your Layers tab, click on the top layer and then Shift-Click on the last layer. You should now have every layer highlighted/selected.
- Go to Edit > Auto-Align Layers. Most of the time an automatic projection is fine but feel free to play around.
- Hit Okay. Photoshop should have successfully aligned all of your layers, but they will not be blended.
PTGui
This will be standard, easy PTGui. PTGui has a ton of features that deserve an entire blog post. I do recommend downloading the Trial Version of PTGui and giving it a chance.
- Load your images into the Project Assistant window by hitting Load Images.
- Align Images
- A new window will pop up called Edit Panorama. Here you can change the projection if you want.
- If your photo is blurry, that's okay: this is a preview – it would take forever to load each time you moved something if it were full resolution
- When you are happy with your panorama, go back to your Project Assistant window and hit Create Panorama
- Depending on how you want to edit save as Photoshop or TIFF. You can use JPG if you don't intend to edit further.
Plex rarflix download. Ratios differ depending on the type of panorama you've shot.
Types:
- 180° pan across the scene or less. These usually crop at a standard 4:6. A 16:10 is not unheard of.
180° or more, which are usually what we accept as proper panorama photos. These crop at the traditional 2:1.
360° Panorama photos are extremely wide, settling in at a 4:1 or 10:1.
Worth mentioning: little planet panoramas are 360° panoramas that are converted in post.
Take steps to straighten your tripod and ballhead so straightening isn't such a nightmare in post. Better yet, invest in a nodal slide. Without them, you might have to take steps to methodically warp and distort your image back to reality, which Photoshop handles well. I can't always recommend trying it in Lightroom, but for small adjustments, I find the Vertical transform tool isn't terrible. I spent a good hour getting the Trevi Fountain shot below straight.
Instagram does not accept the ratios we're working with, nor does it resize images to fit inside their 1:1 preview and 4:6 maximum.
I crop my images to 1:1 squares, save them individually, then put the full panorama inside of a 4:6 image.
When uploading to Instagram, select the first photo and use 'Select Multiple' in the bottom-right corner of the window. Select the other 1:1 images, then the full image. Hit next and get to captioning.
When I first started taking panoramas, I didn't know about white balance. As such, my colors were different, like a purple sky in the right sky and blue on thee left, sometimes one random photo would be totally different. Terrible! Set your white balance (and/or use a WhiBal card) before you shoot.
You might find that you shot correctly but time got away. It happens to the best of us. Use graduated filters to gradually color correct, or masks in Photoshop for subtle, natural adjustments.
Local adjustments change a specific area of your photo as opposed to the entire photo.
