Surfshark Privacy Beyond Vpn Review

broken image

Surfshark is one of the most popular VPN with the best deals around. Surfshark VPN has over 1,700 servers in 160 locations in 63 countries.

Surfshark is a versatile VPN that encrypts users' data and provides features that are beyond VPN. It helps the user to stay private and protected whenever they use a public network. With 800+ servers across 50 countries. Surfshark extends its support to windows, Mac, IOS, Android, and Linux through apps.

Surfshark is the cheapest VPN I've tested. But does the quality match its price? Let's find out.

  1. That is why we decided to move beyond VPN and develop tools which could empower privacy-seekers to oversee their digital presence better than ever before,' says Naomi Hodges, Cybersecurity Advisor at Surfshark. The first of the new features will be an ID protection service HackLock.
  2. Of course, Surfshark is a paid VPN, which shouldn't be surprising considering the wide range of features the service offers. With its military-grade encryption, multi-platform support, ability to unblock Netflix, and bypass the Great Firewall of China, it would even be unfair to enjoy all these functions for free.
  3. Despite being one of the newer VPNs (launched in 2018), Surfshark has all the trappings of a premium VPN service. It is equipped with all the features you would expect from top-rated VPN services: tons of servers, high-end security, a solid no-logs policy, automatic leak protection, the ability to unblock major streaming services, and a variety of specialized servers and advanced capabilities.

Surfshark is the best VPN for Netflix, torrents, anonymous browsing on public WiFi.

I am using Surfshark VPN for a long time, and now I can say that it has everything that I need to stay secure online.

One of the best thing about Surfshark VPN is an unlimited simultaneous connection. NordVPN has six connection limit, but with Surfshark VPN, you can use unlimited devices.

This VPN includes strong AES-256-GCM encryption, OpenVPN, and IKEv2.

Another most useful feature is GPS Spoofing. This feature returns the coordinates of your custom selected VPN server. With GPS Spoofing, you will get advanced security features like URL and ad blocking and P2P support.

About Surfshark VPN

If you surf the internet regularly, then you should seriously consider Surfshark. Surfshark has some of the best features available on any internet protection application.

You can use Surfshark for Mac to unearth all kinds of information that would have previously been hidden. Surfshark offers some of the best protection available and is one of the most popular free VPN applications.

Surfshark has several of the features of other premium VPN apps. Surfshark provides an excellent user experience with an intuitive interface. It allows you to manage your connection status, view your bandwidth, and gain access to your private connections as well.

It is also an excellent way to access any content securely you wish online without fear that others are also looking at your activities.

Surfshark VPN Features

  • Connections Limit: No limit
  • Operating systems: Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux
  • Protocols: OpenVPN, IKEv2, Shadowsocks (Proxy), Wireguard, L2TP
  • Logging policy: No logs
  • Servers: 3200+ servers
  • Price: From $2.21/month
  • Money-back guarantee: 30 days

Surfshark VPN comes with easy to use user interface. It's a smart app that allows users to connect with high-speed servers.

Surfshark is based in the British Virgin Islands, just like ExpressVPN. One of the best thing about Surfshark is, it only keeps your email address and billing information.

Private browsing mode

You can use Surfshark in private browsing mode, which is available in addition to the regular surfing and downloading capabilities. This feature uses your bandwidth and prevents other users from accessing your site.

This is an excellent way to use the Surfshark app while surfing the internet and gives you more control over your privacy and security. You will also have the ability to access private media content that is usually not available to users of public or shared IP connections.

Browser extension support

Surfshark has been designed to work in both the Apple iPhone and the iPad with the latest versions. You can easily install the extension from the official website and configure it with your existing web browser.

The browser extension provides you with a very similar user experience as you would get from using the Surfshark web browser. It works equally well in all circumstances, whether you are online or not.

Crash reports

One of the features that make the Surfshark app stand out is its ' Crash Reports' feature. This is a customizable option that lets you receive regular crash reports about your system's errors and problems. You can even choose from the possibilities of what type of reports you want. It sends these reports to your Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail account.

This is useful in keeping your system clean. While surfing the net, Surfshark would send you a notification if there is an error in your connection or your settings like language settings or security options.

Surfshark Vpn Reviews

Vpn

While Surfshark is newer than its older and more readily recognized peers, it's moved fast to establish itself as a seriously competitive VPN option. Despite having a smaller server fleet than NordVPN or ExpressVPN, Surfshark makes up for it with its impressive features and competitive speeds. The budget-friendly VPN also has more configurable privacy add-ons than reputable services such as IPVanish.

I recommend Surfshark for its unlimited device support, its blazing speeds, and its rich suite of security and privacy features.

Speed

  • Average speed loss: 53% speed lost in autumn 2020 tests
  • Number of servers: 3,200+
  • Number of server locations: 65 countries
  • Optional static IP addresses available

I ran my speed tests over the course of three days with dynamic IP addresses using both wireless and ethernet connections. Internet speeds in the US vary widely by state and provider. And with any speed test, results are going to rely on your local infrastructure, with hyperfast internet service yielding higher test speed results.

That's one reason I'm more interested in testing the amount of speed lost (which for most VPNs is typically half or more) across both high-speed and slower connection types, and in using tools like Speedtest.net to even out the playing field. In the case of Surfshark, only 17% of average internet speeds were lost. That's even faster than the 27% speed loss I measured in 2019, and makes Surfshark the current fastest VPN in our autumn 2020 speed tests.

Vpn

Surfshark's fast speeds during testing pushed the service immediately past NordVPN's tested speeds, which averaged 53% speed loss, and ahead of other speed-intensive VPNs such as ExpressVPN and IPVanish. This is particularly impressive given the comparatively small size of Surfshark's server fleet.

The remarkable thing about Surfshark's speed is that its average speeds aren't fighting to overcome major speed losses in any particular test region. This thing showed up on race day and stole the gold, seemingly without breaking a sweat. During testing, my base non-VPN speeds averaged 194 megabits per second, while Surfshark's overall average was 161Mbps. After taking the averages of five testing locations, not one of the averages from those locations fell below 100Mbps. That's an across-the-board win against its competitors in every test column.

Surfshark clocked a 204Mbps average on US connections. It outperformed its peers during UK and European tests, averaging 165Mbps and 171Mbps in each, respectively. It then averaged 126Mbps in Australia, before averaging 142Mbps in Singapore. These are speeds I haven't seen from any VPN I've tested so far.

Security and privacy

  • Jurisdiction: British Virgin Islands
  • Encryption: AES-256-GCM, RSA-2048, Perfect Forward Secrecy
  • No leaks detected
  • Includes kill switch

I like that Surfshark is headquartered in the British Virgin Islands, which is generally considered a privacy-friendly country due to its lack of surveillance-sharing agreements with other countries. Although it's a territory of the United Kingdom, the British Virgin Islands is a separate legal jurisdiction to the UK with nos privacy policy affirms that it goes beyond typical VPN practices, keeping no location-identifying connection logs and allowing you to opt out of default-enabled diagnostic crash reports. That said, I'd still prefer to see more detail fleshed out in the policy.

Its encryption is standard AES-256-GCM, and it supports Perfect Forward Secrecy, which means it frequently changes encryption keys to avoid security compromises. The company offers a useful kill switch feature, which prevents network data from leaking outside of their secure VPN tunnel in the event the VPN connection fails. Surfshark's browser add-ons for Chrome and Firefox have also been independently audited by security research firm Cure 53.

No IP address, DNS or other potentially user-identifying data leaks were detected during my testing. I didn't detect any WebRTC leaks, which are common among VPNs due to more widespread and well-known browser issues, either. Even if you don't need it, it's noteworthy that Surfshark offers a specific browser plug-in to prevent additional WebRTC leaks.

If you're concerned about DNS privacy on mobile, Surfshark also offers a standalone app Trust DNS from the Google Play Store. In the simplest terms, it reroutes the website information requests from your browser and sends them to Surfshark instead of your internet service provider. Rerouting DNS information in this way could help you get past censorship walls and keep your telecom company out of your business.

What makes Surfshark stand out from other services we've recently reviewed at CNET? It offers a multihop VPN. For an added layer of protection, you can tell Surfshark to send your internet traffic through servers in two countries instead of just one. Multihop VPNs can be particularly useful in preventing your information from being identified if a security breach happens at one of the VPN's own data centers.

Cost

Surfshark is currently living up to its name with an aggressive pricing scheme. As of September, its price is $2.49 monthly for a two-year plan ($59.76 in total). That offer stands up easily to NordVPN's two-year plan at $3.71 a month ($89 in total), and IPVanish's one-year plan at $5.20 per month ($62 a year). On its six-month plan, Surfshark costs $6.49 monthly ($38.94 in total). It also offers a monthly plan for $12.95.

Along with credit or debit, you can pay via PayPal, Alipay or Bitcoin and be assured of a 30-day money-back guarantee. The site offers 24/7 chat support, and a healthy amount of support articles and tutorials.
